Leddin Town Twelve days. Almost two weeks sailing with nobody to talk but the yacht crew. The room was very comfortable, the food was fantastic and the view was beautiful. For the first few days, at least, but then it quickly got boring. Each day you got more and more anxious, but then it finally happened: land! The day was sunny and warm with a clear blue sky, and in the distance, you could see the strip of green. It took an agonizing hour for you to finally dock. As you disembark onto the small harbor, you can see there are two other ships recently arrived. Your new companions, you assume, but you barely see them before your attention turns to the few people apparently waiting for you. There are four of them in lab coats looking excitedly at you, with dark skins and curious eyes, and in the center a woman stands ahead, waving at the three of you with a wide smile. Hello! I'm so glad you all arrived! - she says, walking towards you and extending her hand to shake yours - I hope the trip was fine. It was good, wasn't it? It was, of course. Beautiful weather we have. Perhaps a bit too hot. Is it too hot? - she speaks quickly, already guiding you through a small path, the other researchers following behind and whispering among themselves. Gosh, where are my manners? I'm Lotus, Lima's newly appointed professor. Ha, guess I should introduce myself as Professor Lotus then, shouldn't I? she says with a laugh. After a few minutes of Professor Lotus' seemingly unstoppable chit-chat and brisk walk, you arrive at a large wooden cabin. She barely stops to open the door on her way in, ushering you all inside. Well, this is it. This is where the magic happens. Now, I know you must be itching to start, but we shouldn't rush things, am I right? Before we do what you all came here for... - she says gesturing towards a table where three pokéballs rest - I'd like to know a bit more about you. I mean, I know who you are, but I don't know WHO you are. Know what I mean? Guess you don't know each other either, so let's share! she says with a grin, sitting cross-legged on the table and looking at you expectantly.

Haruka blinked owlishly through her glasses as she stepped out onto the gangplank. She was still getting used to the light after leaving the shelter of the umbrella she had set up for shade so she could watch the approach of the land without getting sunburnt. She squinted slightly, trying to see through the bright sun getting in her eyes with limited success. She carefully stepped down it, making sure not to step on her long red skirt... or get it caught on anything. She'd made sure to wear her best for this first meeting at the very least, but she was beginning to regret it somewhat as this place seemed very... warm. She shifted in her long sleeved white blouse uncomfortably as she could feel herself growing warmer than what would be comfortable. Hmm... perhaps such clothing was... unwise to wear. Her eyes briefly fell upon the greeting committee on the dock. No, they didn't seem to be as formally dressed as her. A misstep, then. Not to mention... she supposed this choice in clothing seemed fairly... old fashioned. Haruka let out a brief sigh. She'd already found out that most found her ways to be... odd. The sailors have given her a lot of strange looks every time she came out in the morning to do prayers to ward off any foul spirits that might be following the boat. She was fairly sure they might have caught the attention of an Umibōzu and a check of the ship's cargo made her realize they didn't even have a bottomless barrel in place to ward off any attempts at drowning! But apparently most people these days found rituals and chanting strange and so, the looks. Though... Haruka supposed her behavior otherwise might have been somewhat strange as well, as she had spent most of her time in her room studying up on any supernatural phenomenon she might run into on her journey and practicing ways to ward them off. It's not like there was anything better to do since the ocean didn't hold much charm for her after the many crossings between Olivine and Cianwood she undertook.
Haruka resigned herself to the odd looks and made her way down the rest of the gangplank to the dock below. She made to open her mouth to greet the small party there to meet her before she found herself preempted by one of them, a woman, speaking at lightning fast pace. Haruka was slightly taken aback at the onslaught of words, but stuck out her hand to shake the... apparently professor's hand.
"Well... I am used to cooler weather, but-" Haruka managed to get out before the professor started off at a pace that was almost a jog. Struggling to keep up in her long skirt, Haruka forewent speaking in order to focus on not tripping over herself. She figured she could talk more when they stopped since she wasn't interested in her first impression being one in the ground from a faceplant. Though it wasn't long before she suddenly found herself in some sort of cabin with the professor and two others. Her partners? She supposed she should follow the professor's directions and introduce herself. "My name is Haruka Omiya, I come from the, ah... Kanto-Johto region. I suppose I'm your expert in the supernatural," Haruka managed to get out. Hmm... that wasn't much. She should probably say more, but... what? "My bloodtype is AB, born September 23rd, my favorite dish is yakisoba, and... I do a lot of calligraphy?" That... didn't say anything about her at all. Argh, she should've gone for her horoscope or maybe her favorite word? Whatever. Now that she spat out that nonsense, she might as well let the others introduce themselves so she didn't make more of a fool of herself.

Erica kept mostly to herself while on the boat. She was taking apart and putting together the few cases she had. She'd hoped maybe she could use the time to make them more efficient, but no dice. Not to mention she was very distracted that this new Professor seemed to know about her skills and how she facilitated those skills.
That's... uncomfortable.
When the ship finally docks, she quickly packs up and heads out. As soon as she's out of the air conditioned boat, and once the professor mentions it, it is quite hot. She takes her jacket off, and folds it up in her hands. She quietly follows the group, mostly ignoring the chatter around her. But when they are addressed, she wishes to wait, and the first of the three of them puts themselves forward. The first one up is 'Haruka' and she's very much the odd one out. What did they take her straight from a shrine? Yesh.
"Not sure if that's what she meant... But anyway. Erica Anglewood. I guess if we are calling ourselves 'experts'..."
Not to mention our Professor already seems to know, so why hide it.
"...guess I'm your tech expert? I uhhh, jailbreak pokeballs with these."
Erica pulls out one of her pokeball cases for everyone to see.
"They make the balls function differently in effective ways. Otherwise I'm not sure what else to say? I guess implying that I've never been in a pokemon battle in my life, or even owned one, is relevant?"
She just shrugs.

The Journey had been long, but not unpleasant. Dean had spent most of his time out on the deck, breating in the fresh sea breeze as he listened to music. The calming tunes of his favorite artists were the only thing keeping his excitement in check. After his miserable performance in his last pokémon league adventure, the Lavaridge town native felt he had something to prove. Most of all, to himself.
Whenever he had thought back about that last battle, he couldn't help but feel emberassed. His opponent had toyed with him, slowly wearing his team down with evasive techniques and damage over time. When His Blaziken fell to Roserade, Dean's dream crumbled. He had the advantage in both type and hitting power, but the poison coursing through his starter's body had been so debilitating, making both his pokémon and himself look like absolute amateurs. When the fight was done and he went to shake his opponent's hand, Dean didn't meet her gaze, his eyes full of tears of disappointment. He had learend a couple of days later that Kelly Daniels had made it all the way to the finals, where she lost after an epic six on six battle. It had done little to lift the boy's spirits though.
That was three years ago now and Dean had grown as a human being in the meantime. He had taken his studies seriously, learning all that he could about the creatures that inhabited the world together with them. His studies weren't limited to pokémon only though, Professor Birch had made sure of that. He had continued training with his team as well. although he had released some of his pokémon back into the wild. Only Manectric and Blaziken remained and he had made sure that his sister Abbey would take care of them while he traveled to Lima. His instructions were clear: Start fresh, evaluate the league system and report back. Dean knew very well that this was a great priviledge and he had made sure the professor knew he was very thankful for the opportunity.
Today was not a day to reflect though. Standing on the Deck, Dean saw something he hadn't seen in almost 2 weeks:Land! His body was tense with excitement, the wind caressing his face as a welcoming friend. When the boat got closer to the shore he spotted 2 others approaching as well. Birch had told him there would be others as well, each tasked with the research of a different aspect of the Lima Region. He couldn't wait to meet his colleagues, maybe one of them was a pretty girl.. Shaking the distracting thoughts from his hand The Hoen Native saw the crew make the final preparations to dock the ship. Dean was already halfway over the ramp when he turned around. Waving and smiling to the crew that had taken care of him during the journey he let out a "Thanks guys for the wonderfull time! Have a great time here and safe journey".
He saw a small group of people a little further up and with a brisk pace, started to walk towards them. Dean was all for making a good first impression, so he made sure he looked presentable. He was wearing a green, short sleeved, button down over a white t-shirt, with dark blue shorts. He was also wearing his hiking shoes, a parting gift from his sister. He didn't know if it was according to thelatest Lima fashion, but it was clean and comfortable. When he was greeted by Professor Lotus and her crew Dean could hardly contain himself. All through her speech his eyes kept drifting away to the pokéballs on the table. Always a gentleman, Dean waited till the ladies had made their introductions, struggling to keep a straight face when Haruka disclosed her blood type. When he was sure the others were done he took a small step forward:
"Hi there, my name is Dean Masterson and I'm from Lavaridge town in Hoenn. Before starting my studies under Professor Birch I took part in my region's pokemon league".A sudden flash of redness crept over his cheecks when he continued. "I guess that would make me your battling and leaugue expert". Dean quickly scanned the crowd, hoping they were taking him seriously before he concluded with: "I left my pokemon team back in Lavaridge with my family and I thought coming to this Region would be a fresh start. Thanks for this opportunity professor Lotus, it means the world to me".

Professor Lotus listens calmly as the group introduces themselves, a soft smile on her face as she nods at apparently each sentence. It's clear she wants to answer to absolutely everything, but she keeps herself silent during the presentations although her face is almost as clear as any word. She has a look of calm that quickly changes to confusion as Haruka introduces herself before her attention is drawn to Erica and a mischievous smile appears on her face. She even winks at Erica's self-proclaimed tech expertise, literally winks! And then Dean speaks and her face becomes a little more serious and... caring? Almost like a mother looks at her child. "Oh, dear, you don't need to thank me! I am truly delighted you are all here, honestly!" she says, not a single hint of irony or sarcasm in her voice. "I have waited for so long and now you're here! You are actually here! And you are all just how I imagined, simply perfect!" she claps her hands once and you can see her eyes are watering. She stands up and approaches Haruka. "Your miko is absolutely fantastic, Miss Omiya! Wait, can I call you Haruka? I'm gonna call you Haruka, Erica, and Dean, and then you call me Lotus, ok? No need for formalities here," she says quickly looking at the others, already touching the fabric of the shrine attire. "I had only seen pictures of them, you see? We don't have shrines like what you have back in the mainland, so I'm truly glad you wore those. They truly are gorgeous and oh, so delicate." She takes a step back, looking at all three trainers once more. "I'm sorry, I'm just so excited! Ok, calm down, Lotus..." she says to herself, closing her eyes for a second before opening them again and walking behind the table so you are in opposite faces, the pokéballs between professor and trainers. "As you said, each of you was chosen for your particular skills in different areas. We do understand some of you haven't had experience in pokémon battles," she smiles to the girls, "but neither have all the trainers who start their journey here. So you don't have to fear anything, I'm sure it will all come naturally in no time. Besides, you'll have Dean on your side and I'm confident he'll be more than willing to help you with anything you need." She smiles once again, before reaching under the table and getting three backpacks she lays in front of you. "Now, this is the equipment we have set for you. It has everything you'll need to start your trip, including medical supplies, provisions and... this!" she reaches inside one of the backpacks to grab a small lilac device. Although it's slightly different from the ones in your regions, it's clearly a pokédex. "This is just our initial prototype, but it works quite well. It's already connected to the League's main system, so I'm sure it's gonna be fairly simple to use. We hope you'll help to gather more information about the pokémon on Lima with those. Want to start now?" she grins, before pointing at the three pokéballs on the table. "These are your starters. You gotta pick one now," she says excitedly, the words enunciated in a very happy, almost singing voice, as she hands each of you a pokédex. "I think you should see your options in here first before we let them out. A new pokémon's first contact is very important, so we don't want to confuse them with these many people around," she says, and you notice that all the other researchers are right behind you, also looking anxious. "Just turn it on and see the three first indexes. Iguard, Crocoal, and Swimole. Talk among yourselves, decide who wants which and we'll be ready for this!" she finishes, an almost hysterical look on her face. | The Shield Pokémon | An Iguard's parents will slice off a piece of a tree stump for their offspring to use as a practice shield.
They learn how to block attacks with their shields at an early age, and carry their practice shields everywhere so that they can adjust to the weight. Sometimes they use the shield as a table when stopping to eat. | | The Burn Cub Pokémon | Crocoal are young and prone to bursting into flame without warning.
They tend to spontaneously combust at inopportune moments, such as when they are hunting, giving away their presence and scaring their prey away. The tips of this Pokémon's mane and tail are always smoldering as a result.
| | The Stargazer Pokémon | Swimmole like to blow bubbles into the air at night, watching the reflections of the stars on their surfaces.
They hunt by exhaling bubbles into the rocks on the bottom. The scent of prey sticks to the bubbles, and a Swimole's sensitive nose can detect it in an instant before snapping it up.

Erica raises an eyebrow when she realizes she's winked at. Is this some sort of game to the Professor? Odd. Erica might need to have a word with her alone, later. She also raises a seperate eyebrow at 'Dean'. She muses internally.
Already done this league business once before, huh? What are you running from buddy?
Suppose it doesn't matter, Erica lets it go. He seems too 'pure' for any shenanigans in his history. She then has to blink in stunned silence as the Professor just continues to rattle off. She can TALK, for sure. Mid-way through her speech, Lotus hands them all supplies and the prototype dex. Now we are talking. Also seems to be a brand new toolkit and some case supplies already.
Ok this is getting creepy. We very much need to have a word after this.
She shakes her head and puts the bag aside, and takes a look at the dex. Even it's a proto-type, it's certainly not primative, like the original Kanto dexes she's seen. At this point those belong in a history museum. Hell the screens were all green-tinted, had no colors, and they were huge obnoxious things. Barely could be counted as 8-bit. Regardless, she quickly flips through a few of the screens to acclimate herself, before catching the instruction to head to the dex screen. She does so, and sees the three pokemon. She flips through the few options. Not one single one speaks to her, but she just needs something to get started with. Even if it ends up being sub-par, her cases can help close the gap.
She looks to the other two looking over their options, and she makes a 'after you' gesture to them both.
"Go nuts, you two."

When Lotus presents them with their pokédexes, Dean is eager to immediately snatch one of them up. He looks the device over quickly. It doesn't look extremely high tech, but it seems to work pretty smooth. Booting it up, Dean immediately recognizes the three entries for the Lima Region starters. One by one, he looks at them.
First up is Iguard, the shield pokémon. By reading only this small bit of text, the young man is immediately interested. The way this pokémon interacts with his shield makes Dean chuckle slightly. He pictures himself and Iguard, sitting at a table made from the pokémon's shield, enjoying lunch together. At that moment, his decision is already made, without looking at the other entries.
He does look at the other entries, just to make sure he isn't missing anything. The Crocoal looks like a pretty vicious attacking pokemon and even though it looks formidable on paper, Dean immediately dismisses it as "Not falling into old habits". The Swimole however, does look quite interesting. It might be on the slow side, but Dean reckons it has a very wide movepool with a lot of options. Even though this toolbox would probably come in quite handy, it doesn't sway him from the decision his heart had already made for him.
He quickly glances around to see if the girls are also inspecting their pokédexes and as soon as he's able to make eye-contact, tries to start up a conversation with them both.
"These pokémon look incredible, right? It's nothing like what we have over in Hoenn". He extends a hand in greeting to both ladies in turn and while trying to hide his slight blush he continues. "Professor lotus was right when she told you I'd be more then willing to help you guys get a hang of battling if you want, it'd be my pleasure. Uhm... Have you guys made a selection yet, I have to say it was love at first sight with Iguard for me. Would you guys be cool with me choosing that one?"

Erica doesn't really see the hand extended, too busy futzing with her new device.
"Uh yeah. I mean I'm sure I can do it. Can't be too hard right?"
She looks at the selection Dean pointed out, and shrugs.
"Like I said. All yours unless Haruka objects."

Haruka settled down as she endured the stares from her previous comments. Of course, on her first impression with the region's professor and the people she would be traveling with for who knows how long, she started rambling about her blood type of all things. Haruka internalized another long sigh as she paid attention to the introductions of her other two teammates.
When Erica presented the pokeball case, she just kind of stared at it. She'd... never seen anything like that before. She didn't really know what Erica meant by 'jailbreaking' either. What did pokeballs have to do with jails? Well... she supposed some people thought they were like that for the pokemon caught inside them like that weird group in Unova... Hrmm... did that mean that Erica was along the line with that sort of group and she used those cases to 'free' pokemon from their trainers? She began to narrow her eyes a bit suspiciously, wondering why Professor Lotus allowed this girl on the program before Erica clarified what the cases did. Oh, well... Haruka guessed that was alright. Though, she would keep an eye on Erica to make sure.
And Dean... he seemed very qualified for this sort of thing. Haruka was beginning to feel less so with every moment that passed. She began to feel a little unsure of things but before she could think about it too much, Lotus was suddenly in her personal space. Haruka tensed up a bit at the sudden intrusion and flushed slightly at her comments about her clothing. "I- um... thanks? Though... I would have appreciated it if you had asked permission beforehand... to prepare myself if anything else..." Haruka stammered. Yeah, she was not going to make this sort of mistake again. Maybe only wear the full outfit when it was absolutely necessary for a ritual so she could avoid this sort of thing... Though the sudden distraction and Lotus's following words did take her mind off of her lack of experience in pokemon battling compared to Dean.
Haruka went through her provided backpack, listening to Lotus's explanation of what's in each. She found something... interesting in hers. A... calligraphy set? Oh, and a nice one too, with precut tags! Haruka already had one, but... this was nicer than hers considering how much hers had been used for things in the past. Hmm... what else... medicine, camping supplies, and... cooking materials? She could work with this. Aaaaand... a strange device? What was this? Some kind of... 'intelligent phone'? Haruka looked up to find Lotus explaining what exactly it was.
Oh, it was the pokedex. Haruka thought they were usually red. She started to fiddle with it when Lotus told them to look up the first entries to decide on which pokemon they wanted. Haruka stared at the small device, eyes narrowing. Now... how exactly did this thing work? Haruka vaguely remembered people with things like this tapping the screen to do things so she gave it a shot... and nothing happened. Haruka turned it over, looking at the back and sides to see several unlabeled buttons. Did... one of those do something? Haruka pressed each one of them in turn with little effect until the last, which caused the screen on the front to suddenly light up. Oh, so that was the power button. "... You think they'd label these for easy use or something..." Haruka muttered to herself. After fiddling with it a while longer, Haruka started a bit when pictures and descriptions of the three pokemon popped up. She was pretty ambivalent toward Swimole and Iguard but... the fire one. It was... cute. And the description of it on the pokedex made her want to hug it and take care of it and make sure nothing bad ever happened to it.
Haruka looked up from the device to hear the other two discussing the pokemon to decide from. "Don't worry, I want Crocoal. It's... cute." Haruka says with a straight face, narrowing her eyes at the last word. She paused for a bit before she realized there was a hand being stuck out toward her. She stared at it for a few moments, thinking about her response to Dean's offer, before taking it. "I think I might take you up on that. I haven't had much experience in battling aside from spirit exorcisms and that doesn't really teach you how to fight with a pokemon," Haruka stated very plainly before thinking back to her backpack for a moment, "If we have a little bit of time before we leave, I know a recipe or two that is said to be good for young pokemon that might help with training. I'd be willing to whip up something for each of us in exchange."
After that, Haruka turned her attention back to the pokeballs on the table. "If everything's settled, do we just... take them?"

Erica rolls her eyes at Haruka having tech-issues. She stays silent though, cause the second she offers, Erica will be the go-to for any silly technical questions. Learned that lesson with her mother.
"Alright then. Guess the bubble one is going to me. Sounds fine."
She considers her leftovers for a moment. A little goofy-looking, but it'll have to do. Under her helpful cases, it should do fine. She knows them, and hopes that'll make up for her complete lack of pokemon knowledge. She's tempted to listen in on the Dean/Haruka lesson that was requested, but decides against it. She'll be able to handle herself. She always has.

Professor Lotus stays silent as the group discusses their choices, but it's very evident it takes effort not to say anything. When the group seems to have found a conclusion, she claps her hands euphorically. "Fabulous! Oh, I knew you wouldn't have a problem picking them. It's always a surprise what you pick, though. I think I still have to learn a lot if I can't predict it, huh?" she says jokingly, moving towards the pokéballs. As she grabs the first one, she suddenly stands straight and speaks loudly and, for the first time since you arrived, seriously. "Unless you are a trainer who is just about to get your first pokémon, I suggest you find something to occupy yourself somewhere else." Immediately the people in lab coats scramble, grabbing papers and bags and rushing to the door until nobody is left but the four of you. Professor Lotus' voice comes back to the joyful tone as she addresses you: "Terribly sorry for that. They are still quite new and very excited, too. But we really don't want to startle the little ones," she says with a smile, before handing each one of you one of the pokéballs. "Now, let's get some distance, shall we? Erica, would you mind moving a bit towards the back there, by the computer? And you, Dean, closer to the door? You just stay here, Haruka. Fantastic!" she announces as the trio spreads out. "This will give you plenty of room to know your new companion and they can focus on their new trainers. This prevents them from getting confused... or too aggressive..." she adds the last part in a whisper to herself before quickly continuing, "Don't forget this very first contact is extremely important to determine what relation you'll have, at least for the few first months. When you are ready, all you have to do is press the button at the center of the pokéball," she says calmly, once again sitting on the table. You all get now your starter pokémon!
Dean gets Iguard, Erica gets Swimole and Haruko gets Crocoal.
They come at level 6, and you may choose their gender, nature, and ability. If you want, you can give them a skill background.
You can also choose 1 egg move to start with, and 4 other egg or tutor moves to form an inheritance list. These moves will be learned at levels 20, 30, 40 and 50. All these moves must obey the September playtest rule, including the one you choose to start with.
You may now interact with your starter and are in control of it, at least for now. You'll determine its behavior and attitudes, but once I get a feeling for their personality, I may take control of them from time to time, especially when the story dictates.

Haruka waited with anticipation as the professor walked over to the pokeballs on the table and her eyes widened slightly as Professor Lotus banished the rest of the lab coated people out of the room. Huh. So she did have a serious face. Well, it seemed like they had a healthy respect or fear for her anyway... Perhaps she wasn't someone to cross. Haruka filed the information away before being presented with a pokeball. She took it and examined it as the professor kept talking. She had never really held a pokeball before, it seemed... right to carry around somehow. She grinned slightly, could get used to this. She was feeling pretty okay with meeting her starter until the Professor added a small remark under her breath, making Haruka's anxiousness climb back up. Oh, great. The pokedex did say that Crocoal hunt things... would it attack her if it didn't like her? Professor Lotus didn't seem like the kind of person to put them in danger though and her own experiences with pokemon on the roads of Kanto and Johto suggested that they wouldn't unless you bothered them, so...
Despite her reasoning, Haruka still felt a little bit of trepidation. This might end up affecting her journey long term if it went wrong and she couldn't help but worry a bit about it. What if it didn't like her then they thought she wasn't a good trainer and kicked her out of the program? She really hoped that wouldn't happen but... waiting wasn't going to help anything, so Haruka swallowed and pressed the button in the center of pokeball, causing a flash of red light as a small figure appeared in front of her. A red, furry creature blinked at the sudden change of scenery before it seemed to realize there was a person staring at it intensely. Haruka fixed the Crocoal with a penetrating stare, it was just so... cute. She just wanted to go over and hug it forever! But... that would probably freak it out so Haruka restrained herself. Though it looked like the pokemon was getting a bit agitated by her continual piercing gaze, so she figured she should probably do something. Haruka stepped forward, kneeling next to the creature, trying to be non-threatening. When she got close to it, she spoke, "I'm Haruka, I'm going to be your trainer from now on." Doing something that wasn't staring at it intensely seemed to cause it to relax slightly, giving Haruka the courage to reach up and pat its head, which it seemed to enjoy. Haruka smiled as the creature leaned into the petting, it reminded her of the Vulpix her family had as a pet when she was young. Furry and warm. "I think we'll do well together. Let me just say one thing," she said, suddenly growing serious, "You. Are. Adorable." punctuating each word with a brief pause as the last one seemed to light a fire in her eyes, "That is all."
In contrast to its previous skittishness, the Crocoal tensed and growled slightly, smoke beginning to smolder at its mane and tail. It seemed... offended. Haruka raised an eyebrow at that, "You... don't like being called cute?" Her question was responded to by another quiet growl causing Haruka to smirk slightly. "Well, I promise I won't do it too much then but... you are cute and I just want to hug and treasure you forever," she said causing the creature to grumble more. Haruka chuckled as she rummaged through her bag, ruffling the Crocoal's fur with one hand. The pokedex was supposed to give information on pokemon when it scanned them, right? She knew at least that much. After getting it out, she fumbled with it some more before managing to turn it on. Luckily, there was a function labeled 'Scan' on the front page, so she was able to get it to work pretty easily. Though she almost dropped it when a sudden light emerged from it, seeming to scan the creature in front of her. She was able to read the previous blurb about the pokemon she saw earlier, plus some information about this one in particular. "You're male, then? How do you like the name Kasai? I think it works, since you are a Fire type, after all."
The Crocoal blinked at her. She waited for a few moments... it didn't seem to have any objections, so Hakura nodded. "Kasai it is, then. Do you mind being picked up?" she asked as she reached out to do so, causing him to dart away, growling a bit again. Haruka frowned slightly, "Aww... I guess that's a yes then. I didn't mean that I'd hug you forever when I said that thing about it, I'd have to let you go for battles after all." This didn't seem to assuage him in the slightest, leading Haruka to sigh. "I'll get you eventually, just you wait. I will feel how fluffy you are. I swear it," Hakura muttered to herself as she straightened back up. She glanced around the room at the other two then Professor Lotus before she spoke. "I think me and Kasai are acquainted now, what next?"

Erica makes a weird face when Lotus pseudo-threatens her staff. And it stays as she is told to have some distance.
"Damn, ok. Guess I'm going over here in the corner then? Fine."
She gets back there, and looks at the pokeball. A basic one, it seems. We'll fix that. Erica immediately applies a Flash case to it's pokeball. She sighs.
"Guess we can't put it off."
She throws the ball down, releasing the creature. It looks around, blowing bubbles cutely. But it... doesn't seem to be paying attention to Erica. She tries to step around in it's vision to get it's attention.
"Ummm... Hi. Nice to meet you? I suppose I should say that? And... you aren't paying attention to me."
The Swimole seems to have turned, staring up at it's surroundings mid-way through Erica's line. She keeps trying to come around, only getting a little bit before the pokemon gets distracted again.
"I'm Erica and... I'm your trainer now... I was thinking of naming you Gapic... Is that ok? And... *huff* And now I'm dizzy..."
Erica puts a hand on her temple as her vision is spinning.

Walking over to his assigned spot at the door, Dean clutches the pokéball tightly. A million thoughts cross his mind and nerves start to kick in. "This is not your first rodeo, you can do this", he tells himself before exhaling deeply. Pressing the button on the center of the ball, Dean takes a step back to make sure his new partner will have enough space. As soon as the light dissipates he sees the Iguard standing straight, staring intently at the human before him.
A smile spreads across Dean's face as he once more takes out the pokédex, quickly scanning the creature that stands in front of him He makes a quick mental note about some key features as the Lizard clutches a round slab of wood he didn't notice at first. He carefully approaches the little, green lizard and crouches down so they can talk at eye level. "Hey there little guy, my name is Dean and I'm your trainer from now on." He then stretches out his hand, to gently touch both the Pokémon and the shield it is carrying. Iguard flinches initially, but once he sees the human means him no harm he allows Dean to touch him. "That shield of yours looks quite impressive, I bet it can take quite a hit right?" Dean's smile broadens as he sees Iguard nod to his statement. "It's a good thing as well, as you and I will be taking on the Lima league together and we'll be in it to win it" The grass Pokémon grins and thumps his shield as a confirmation. So far, it had not made a sound yet. Dean notices this, but decides to ignore it for now. Instead he rubs his chin, feeling a slight stubble, as he contemplates something for a moment. "Ah, I didn't give you a name yet, did I. I was just so excited to finally meet you. hmmm, how does Sentinel sound to you?" The Pokémon seemed to contemplate the name for a couple of seconds before nodding and letting out a loud cry in confirmation. "That's settled then, welcome to the team Sentinel! I need to take care of some stuff real quick and then we'll get going. You can return to your ball for now".
Pressing the button on the ball again, Sentinel is transported to the device. Dean attached the ball to the clip on his belt and goes off to examine the contents of his backpack. Happy with what he sees, he takes out the book the professor has given him and quickly skims the pages. "Might come in handy". He does see some basic survival items lacking and Dean is glad he brought his own sleeping bag and some other knickknacks he knew might be of use.
He took a quick glance to see how his female companions were doing before stepping up to professor Lotus. "Iguard is great, professor. I can't wait to see what he can do on the battlefield. One thing though, do they keep that shield as they evolve? If so, I think it might be a good idea to make some kind of handle, so he always has a free hand."
Just a bit of crunch to let you know the decisions I've made. Iguard is male, with a proud nature. He has the ability overgrow and I've decided against a skill background for now, as I feel something like that more fitting for wild Pokémon. As an egg move, I've chosen Mega drain for now. The inheritance moves will be listed on the sheet.

Professor Lotus stays quiet as you meet your pokémon for the first time, but it's obvious she's bubbling with excitement. As soon as you seem to be done, she leaps off the table and claps her hands enthusiastically. "Well done, well done! It seems you are a good fit after all. I'm so relieved!" she says, looking particularly at Haruka. "Give it a little more time and you'll be great partners. I'm sure of it!"Just as the professor finishes speaking, one of the researchers knocks on a window and raises it to lean into the cabin. "Sorry, Professor, but I just got word of a couple of F's and possibly a V at Ground 3. Thought you'd like to know." he says with a grave voice despite his young face. "A V?" Lotus asks, moving towards the back of the cabin. "Oh, yeah, I could use that. I only got one. Go ahead and see if you can locate them. Keep your eyes peeled for R's, they usually are together." With that, the researcher simply nods and closes the window, rushing somewhere else. "Well, it seems work needs me. Again," she says with a smile, holding what looks like a scroll in her hand. "So let's just set you on your way, ok? Erica, try using something shiny to have Swimole's attention. The flash from the pokédex is good," she says, pointing at the back of the device. "Dean, no need to worry about the shield. Iguard can hold with only one hand and even his tail if necessary. Rough scales and bark, work like a kind of velcro. Haruka," she says finally, making a kind facing, "sorry about earlier. In Lima, we don't really have personal spaces, so I didn't know you'd be bothered. I should have and it won't happen again. Not with me, at least, but be warned people here are quite... friendly," she says with a smile. She points at a picture on the east wall, a large map of the whole region. "Your pokédexes have a map function, so I hope you won't get easily lost. The next town over is Etaoin, where my main lab is. I'd like us to meet there so we can talk a bit more if that's ok? How about tomorrow evening?" she says, already moving towards the door. "Yes? Fantastic! Dean, can you help the girls with basic training? A simple routine, move recognition, you know the ropes. Try to get some action on the way, maybe a capture or two to get you started, yeah? Awesome!" she says, closing the door behind her as she leaves the cabin. Not a single second later, she opens it again and peeks her head inside. "Oh, and don't mind the Unown. They're harmless," she says quickly, before leaving again. And then you find yourselves alone in the cabin, except for the swimole still looking around distracted and the crocoal scratching his neck with his hind leg, a shower of sparks appearing everytime his fur is moved. Ah, I almost forgot.
We are gonna use the shared dex XP method. Since one of the objectives of the mission is getting info on the pokémon, I think it's a good source of experience so you can level up fairly quickly. And, yes, that includes your starters, which means each of you now have 3 dex XP =)

Haruka frowned slightly as Professor Lotus addressed the personal space problem. That was... great. More people would end up doing that, getting their grubby fingers all over her nice, handmade clothes. All the more reason to change out of this outfit as soon as possible. That and the professor expected them to be in the next town over by tomorrow which might not happen if she was worrying about getting her clothes getting dirty or caught on every bush on the way there. Hakura waited for Professor Lotus to finish her requests then leave the cabin before she drew herself up. "Right, well... Everybody out, please. I'm going to need to change out of these clothes," Hakura stated plainly. With that, she drew the shutters across all of the windows, blocking the interior of the room from sight. With the other two and their pokemon hopefully on the way out, Hakura briefly turned to them, "Oh, and could you stop anyone from coming in until I'm done? Thank you!" After ushering out the other two and closing the door after them with a final thud, Hakura looked for a lock on it. It wasn't that she didn't trust the other two, just that she wanted to cover all of her bases. Though if there wasn't a lock, she'd just push a chair up to it to make it difficult to open at the very least. She dusted her hands off before turning around and spotting Kasai still in the center of the room. "... You... don't need to see this," she commented before returning him to the ball, "I'll let you out once I'm done."With that taken care of, Hakura quickly changed out of her nice clothes into something a little more practical. She looked over herself, just a simple white T-shirt and a pair of jeans dyed red. They weren't anything special, but they were good traveling clothes at the very least. She didn't even want to think about the time she tried heading through Ilex Forest with a skirt. That was a huge mistake for everyone involved. With her clothes switched out, she sent Kasai back out, ruffling behind his ears before going back to thinking. She might as well make that dish that was supposed to be good for young pokemon while she was at it. She pulled out her Cooking Set that she brought with her from home onto the table that the pokeballs were on before getting to work. The cooking supplies she had found in the backpack were surprisingly good for being non-perishables. She pursed her lips slightly as she was close to finishing her dish; it might not taste the greatest, but it was supposed to be nutritious, not good tasting. A few minutes later, she had three servings of Baby Food prepared for her and her companion's starters. After putting her cooking implements away, she knelt down to Kasai and opened one of the containers of Baby food before setting it down in front of him. "Eat up! This will help you grow up nice and strong," she said with a smile. Kasai, seeming to not be a picky eater, dug in immediately, downing the whole thing in a matter of seconds. "Hmm... not a picky eater, are you? Maybe that has something to do with how your diet would be in the wild... I'll have to ask the professor what kind of food is good for you when I see her again," she said mostly to herself as she patted the Crocoal one last time before finishing cleaning up her impromptu cooking session.
There was a click at the door to the cabin as the door suddenly swung open. Hakura stepped through the doorframe, letting Kasai bound through, before closing it behind her. "Okay, I'm ready. I imagine we should start with that basic training before we leave." She seemed to think for a few moments, "Oh, before I forget, here's that food I promised. I made it while I was in there. It's not gourmet, but it should still be okay and it's really good for young pokemon. It should help them get stronger faster, at least for today." With that, she pulled out the other two containers of Baby Food before passing them off to the other two companions. Made three servings of Baby Food, -150 worth of cooking scrap. Also -3 Baby Food if everyone takes it.

There was another chattering info dump that left Erica reeling again. With the names being used as just letters, Erica can only think of vulgar words, which makes herself chuckle. However she does catch the suggestion, and hits the newly dubbed Gapic with a flash from the dex, and his head snaps at her, with an expression like 'I was paying attention the whole time!'.
"Oh look it works. Thanks Prof- And she's out the door already."
Guess that 'talk' will have to wait.
Once Haruka mentions she needs the room, she shakes her head, and scoops up Gapic and begins pushing their new male friend out the door.
"Out we go then, nothing for you to see here man. Let's go."
Once Dean and them are outside, she leans against the door. As a person who always got meowth-called in the city, she at least has a little sorority-like protectiveness of her fellow woman.
"And don't go peeking, Dean. I may not know pokemon but I've basically got a case that works like a flashbang, and I'll make you blind for an hour, kay?"
Erica laughs like she 'might' be kidding? She's not sure. But it's not long before Haruka comes back outside, bearing a new outfit and gifts. She's a bit hesitant, but probably needs all the help that she can get. But that makes her feel like she owes something. And THAT is not happening. Even Dean is supposed to teach them and she doesn't need to hear that shit 'Oh I taught you how to blah blah' down the line.
"Hold on for a sec."
Erica sits down and pulls out the new toolkit. This kit is NICE. It won't be so brand new after a while, but for now? Way better than she ever had before. She starts assembling a case, immediately followed by another. Maybe working on the grass isn't the best idea, but it'll do. She lets Gapic just blink and enjoy the outside, although the other two will see Erica reach over and pull his head down if she sees him try something dumb like stare at the sun. After a little bit, she lifts up, complete with her task. Two brand new Lock cases, ready for use. She hands one to each of them.
"Here. First ones are always free. Now you both are already better than any other new trainers at catching. It's a Lock case. Fits around a ball, an empty one, and it clamps down even harder when you catch something. I'd describe how but it seems like that'll be my time wasted. Just take a second and put it on a blank one and toss it at something you wanna catch. It can also keep a rowdy pokemon in there longer, or if you are cruel you can keep a pokemon captive longer? But..."
She looks at both of their confused faces, and shrugs.
"...don't think either of you will be people who need that. Stick with empty balls. They can be re-used, even if the ball breaks. Oh yeah! I can make and fix some basic balls too. So y'know, don't go giving sliph your money. I got ya. Just make sure you pick up the pieces of your used balls and I can probably help you. And let me know if you need help with those cases. Should be easy for you though. Just clamp it down over the ball."

"Ah that sounds great, I really hope to see it in action soon" Dean answers to Lotus in regards to his Iguard's shield.
When they are disturbed by one of the professor's assistants, Dean tries to pay close attention, but he doesn't get further then memorizing the Letters the pair were using. He somehow feels they are the first letters of Pokémon, maybe even the Unown the professor was talking about. He shoves the thought away when Erica urges him out of the door. He hadn't noticed that Haruka was about to change, but he would definitely give the girl the privacy she desired.
When Dean and Erica are outside she urges him not to go peeking, even threatening with blinding him for failing to listen to her. The smile on her face betrays she's joking, at least that's what Dean thinks. He Grins at his new colleague. "No problem here Erica, you ladies don't have anything to fear from me. You'll soon learn I'm mostly a perfect gentleman".
Dean leans against the wall casually to see Erica start to fidget with what looks like a pokéball toolkit and Haruka emerging from the building. When both girls offer him a present, he doesn't know exactly what to do. He accepts both gifts and thanks both Haruka and Erica.
"Gee, thanks you guys. Now I feel terrible I don't have anything to give to you in return." He pockets both their gifts and puts his backpack on. "What do you say girls, should we get going? I think if we leave now, there will be plenty of time to do some exploring, maybe get a battle or two in like the professor said. I'll walk you through if you'd like me to, it's the least I can do in return."
Dean then takes out the traveling guide to determine the direction they are going and maybe gather some info on the route to Etaoin.

"I believe your 'sage advice' was the part to exchange? Just don't get us killed by random wild pokemon with your new little shield buddy and we'll call it square for now. First one's free, like I said."
Erica merely shrugs.

After Erica accepted her offering, she hunkered down and started tinkering with... something. Haruka watched curiously, but couldn't make heads or tails of what she was doing. It was something... tech-y, she knew that much, but what she was making escaped Haruka entirely. It was a pleasant surprise when the thingamajig was done, but Haruka still had no idea what it was or was for. So she had a perplexed smile across her face until Erica explained what it was and what it did. It sounded... fairly useful, actually. More practical than a lot of technology she had come across. Those... 'intelligent phones' seemed kind of frivolous a lot of the time but this... it was a direct upgrade to a pokeball, which was neat. Though... it also seemed to be the opposite of the 'jailbreaking' that Professor Lotus said Erica did. Haruka thought about bringing the point up, but decided this wasn't really the time or place. She wasn't sure she needed the clarification that badly anyway as long as Erica didn't do anything terrible with her talents. Not that Haruka thought she would, but 'jailbreaking' seemed a little... sinister of a word. She clamped the case around an empty pokeball from her backpack and remarked at how easy it was to apply. Neat! Something she could actually figure out how to use!
Haruka smiled slightly, "Oh, thank you for this. This seems like it will be useful, as well as the offer to fix pokeballs! I didn't even know that was possible! I suppose that was due to my lack of experience in pokemon training..." Haruka thought for a moment about other things she should offer to the party, "I suppose I should say that the effects of the food I just gave you won't last much longer than a day, but... I'm willing to make more! Otherwise all those food supplies are just going to sit in my bag without use... Oh, also I know a thing or two about changing a pokemon's attitude or ability from wrangling with ghosts and other things. If you need my services regarding that, feel free to let me know!"
As Dean spoke, Haruka put up a finger with a grin, "Oh, but you do have something I'd like in return! And that thing is knowledge. I'd like to know how to pokemon battle and so I think doing... 'training' before we leave might be a good idea. I read in a handbook that most trainers do that in the morning before doing anything else and it's supposed to help your pokemon grow better at fighting if you do it everyday. I also think I might be able to teach Kasai how to be a bit more evasive from the stuff I read in that handbook... I don't to be completely clueless in my first pokemon battle since I don't want Kasai to get hurt needlessly! He's too cute for that." Her last comment provoked a brief growl and the smell of something burning from the Crocoal at her feet, causing Haruka's grin to turn into more of a smirk.
